Six Questions to Ask Your Roofing Contractor

Roofer CT

Before you allow anyone into your home, it’s critical to make sure they’re a reliable Connecticut roofing company. Here are the six questions to ask your roofing contractor.

1) Is your company licensed and insured?

This is critical. You don’t want any company working on your home who doesn’t have the proper insurance and licensing that your state requires. At the minimum, the company needs to have general liability coverage. However, we recommend only hiring companies that have general liability, workers compensation, and automotive. Remember, you can absolutely ask the company representative for a copy of these certificates.

2) What is your business address? Do you have a website and social media pages?

When hiring someone to perform work on your home, you want a professional, established business. Checking for a business address assures you that there is a place you can visit to settle any issues or browse their product line. Every business needs to have a website. Being able to view the company website to see their services and project photos should give you peace of mind about the company you’re hiring.

Pro tip: Many good roofing companies will post in-progress pictures on their company Facebook pages. See an example of this here!

3) How long has your company been in business?

It’s important to do business with a roofing contractor that has dealt with many different roof styles and issues. This comes from experience, so we suggest hiring a company that has been in business for at least 10 years.

4) Does your company have references?

This is similar to question #3. You want to make sure that the company you hire has roofed houses before and has satisfied customers to show for it. You can also check online reviews, here are some examples from Facebook, Google, and the Better Business Bureau.

Pro tip: Make sure the company you hire has a Better Business Bureau profile and is A+ rated!

5) Do you provide written or digital proposals?

It doesn’t matter whether the company you hire has written or digital proposals as long as they have one or the other! You want to make sure that there is a set price with guidelines for you and the contractor to follow throughout the course of the job. Also, get a copy for your records!

6) What warranties do you offer? How about the manufacturer?

You want two things: For one, a company that is willing to back up the labor they perform for at least one year. This shows that the contractor is confident in their work and knows they will get the job done right the first time. Second, you want a solid manufacturer’s warranty that will last you for a long time. Lifetime shingles (a 50-year warranty) is now the industry standard for asphalt roofing. Make sure that your roofer is a preferred contractor with at least one manufacturer. If they are, it means that manufacturers have vetted the contractor and assures they perform high-quality work. A company that isn’t a preferred contractor from at least one shingle manufacturer is probably not one that you want to hire.
