One of the best aspects of this time of year is driving by homes and seeing lights and decorations. This certainly is one of the simple joys of the holiday season, but the installation of these decorations isn’t as simple as their pleasing aesthetic. While you decorate, make sure these holiday decoration safety tips are at the forefront of your mind.
Be careful of leaves, ice, and snow
All the things listed above have a big factor in common…they can be incredibly slippery! If there is any sign of slick objects near your ladder or somewhere you will be installing, either wait for installation or clear the affected areas out. For snow and leaves, you will likely be able to clear the area out and begin the installation. However, ice is a different issue. Under no circumstances should you ever rest a ladder on or climb a roof that is icy. Even CT roofers, Guaranteed Roofing, are extremely wary of icy conditions.
Pro tip: Clear leaves away from extension cords, they can be a fire hazard.
Inspect and set your ladder
Be certain that your ladder is in proper working order before climbing it. While setting your ladder up, be sure that it is on firm, stable ground and not resting on your gutters or siding.
Test your lights and extension cords
Visually inspect your lights and cords to be sure there is no showing of bare wires or damage. If there is, we recommend throwing them away and buying fresh lights or cords. It’s also important to make sure both are working properly prior to setting them up.
Have the right equipment
Not all extension cords and lights are meant to be exposed to the elements. Be sure that yours are properly rated for what you’re using them for.
Use hooks
We strongly suggest using hooks or outdoor Command Strips as opposed to materials that could damage your home like staples or nails.
Use a timer
Rather than leaving your decorations on all night, we suggest investing in a light timer. This will make your lights safer and save you money on your electricity bill.
Safely remove your decorations
When the holiday season is over, be sure to follow these safety tips again when you remove the decorations from your home. Be sure you wait for a milder day and one when conditions are safe to begin removal. Also, safely wrap and store your decorations until next season.
Inspect your home
Many homeowners won’t give their home a good inspection until it’s time to decorate for the holidays. If you’re going to be outdoors anyway, you might as well take a close look at your siding, gutters, roof, and windows. Although we recommend multiple inspections per year, at least do this once.
