Signs of Improper Roof Installation

improper roof installation

Your roof is one of your biggest investments, so you want to know signs of improper installation. Improper roof installation can be a huge trouble, leading to leaks, water damage, and other costly issues.

If you have purchased a home or replaced your roof recently, you must check it thoroughly to ensure it has been installed correctly.

You should be able to spot signs of improper roof installation and undertake necessary corrective measures before the storm season hits. Here are some common indicators of improper roof installation.

Uneven shingle lines

A visual inspection of your roof can give away signs of poor-quality installation. If the shingles aren’t aligned properly or appear wavy and bumpy, it is a clear sign of poor workmanship.

In case you find that the shingles are mismatched, it is a sign that the contractor rushed the job and took shortcuts.

Missing shingles

Shingles make up your roof structure and are the single most important component of the roofing system. Missing shingles is the most obvious indication that the roof was not installed properly.

It could expose your roof to costly damage. So, complete coverage with shingles is essential for a sturdy roofing system.

Incorrect nail placement

It is difficult for a layperson to check if the nail length or placement is incorrect. However, when the nail length or placement is not correct, the roof will not withstand the first storm or winds, and you will notice missing shingles.

Your roofer should follow proper nailing techniques and use the right kind of nails for the specific roof type.

Missing underlayment

Underlayment is a thin layer of material such as felt, foam, rubber, or fibre installed below the shingles and above the roof decking. It offers an added layer of protection.

In the absence of underlayment, the roof will age prematurely, and there will be a higher risk of leaks. So, missing underlayment is one of the biggest mistakes a roofer can commit.

Improper gutter installation

If you have overflowing gutters despite proper cleaning and maintenance, it could be due to poor installation. Ideally, the gutters should be slightly sloped towards each downspout to allow proper drainage of water.

If the slope is correct but the gutters are still not functioning properly, it could be because there is not enough downspout for the roof’s size. It could also be due to the use of the wrong type of gutters for the roof.

Improper positioning of the gutters with respect to the roof can also cause problems, such as damage to the fascia board and pooling on the ground underneath.

Stains on the roof

Stains are the tell-tale signs that there is leakage. The moment you notice any stains, you should check the attic because that is where the leak would show through.

Isolated leaks are usually easy to repair. However, when the problem is more serious, you will see multiple stains, which could be due to improper roof installation .

Granule loss

Granules are small particles that make up the top layer of the shingles and help keep rain, ice, and snow from collecting on the roof and in gutters.

If the roof is not ventilated properly, it can lead to premature granule loss, and you will begin noticing granule sitting in the gutters or coming out of your downspouts.

While some granule loss is normal when a roof is newly installed, if it continues, it is a sign that something is wrong.
